2 2 2 rule

The “2 2 2 rule” in dentistry is a simple guideline for good oral hygiene: brush twice a day for two minutes each time, and visit the dentist twice a year.
Following this rule helps prevent cavities and gum disease, making it a cornerstone of preventive oral care. Some versions of the rule also add flossing daily to the habit.

  • Brush 2 times a day: Brushing your teeth in the morning and at night helps remove plaque and food particles.

  • For 2 minutes each time: This duration ensures all surfaces of your teeth are cleaned thoroughly. Brushing for less than two minutes is often insufficient to achieve complete cleanliness.

  • Visit the dentist 2 times a year: Regular checkups and professional cleanings allow dentists to catch potential issues early, such as cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer.

  • (Optional addition): Floss daily: Many versions of the rule also emphasize flossing at least once a day to clean between teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach.
